Sovereignty means, “We are free beings, with authority over our own lives.”
But what do we do with that freedom? Is absolute freedom fulfilling? In itself does this freedom make us happy? Does it make us feel connected? Does it make our lives feel full of purpose?
What Christ asks of us is to ally our Sovereign needs with His, to allow His love and presence to transform our understanding of our Sovereignty so that our Sovereign interests become identical to His.
Each of us makes her or his own decision about God. Those who choose to visit or join this church will do so as a result of the connection of their soul to the presence of God in our worship services, or through other activities sponsored by our church. We are a gathering of like-minded lovers of God and seekers of His ways. “Fellowship” is chosen because it is both humble and encompassing.
Claiming one’s sovereignty is challenging, empowering and frightening. God is revealed through relationships, that we do the work of God when we listen to the journeys of our fellow travelers. We, each of us is sovereign, but each of us also needs allies; none of us travel alone.
Rev. Robert Thompson is an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He has served his denomination as a pastor in churches in Ohio and as a School Minister at an independent boarding school for more than thirty years. Apart from church and family, his passion is the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire, which he currently serves as Board President.
Reverend Thompson started Sovereign Souls AME Church in 2021 amidst the COVID pandemic as an all-digital church with worship and discussion each Sunday.
